How to Jumpstart a Car

1000 × 420

If there's one thing that you need in your car essentials kit, it's a set of jumper cables. This small set of cables and clips can pull your car out of trouble if you find yourself with a dead battery. But if you don't know how to jumpstart a car, you might not know just how important this portable tool can be. In this guide, we'll teach you the steps of jumpstarting a car in simple terms. Let's get started!

Steps of Jumpstarting a Car

Before you begin, you'll need a set of jumper cables and a good Samaritan who is willing to help. You'll need to find a driver with a car that has a voltage equal or greater to your own, but other than that, it doesn't matter what kind of car they drive.

  • Put both vehicles in either NEUTRAL or PARK with the parking brakes on. Turn off the engines.
  • Take the red clips on the jumper cables and attach them to the positive terminals on both engines. The positive terminal is the larger terminal.
  • Take the black clip and attach it to the negative terminal on the other car.
  • Attach the second black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your car, like the metal hood struts.
  • Flip on the driver's engine and let it run for several minutes. Try to start your car. If it doesn't work, wait five minutes and try again.

What to Do After Jumpstarting a Car

If your car sprang to life after the jump, make sure that you do not turn off the engine for at least 15 minutes. You need the engine to keep running in order to charge up the battery. And if your battery is dead again the next morning, it's a good idea to schedule your service with our technicians at Honda City Chicago. We can inspect your battery for damage and take care of the replacement process.
